At 6 Ravenscraig Road, in a 1930s industrial building in Woodstock, Cape Town, sits a light-filled loft with a story. For years this space was the studio of the late South African artist Mark Hilltout, known for his artworks made from reclaimed corrugated iron. Today it is The Mullion, a 90 sqm apartment for travellers who want more than a hotel room: a place with character, history and a creative community right next door.
Mark Hilltout lived and worked in a 400 sqm space in this building. The larger part was his home. The smaller part, where The Mullion is now, was his studio, where sheets of rusted, weathered corrugated iron became art.
We took over the space in 2025 and divided it with care. It is now a 90 sqm apartment and a 310 sqm creative hub for fine and digital artists. The old studio has become a home, and Mark's former residence is once again a place where art is made.
The apartment's name comes from its windows. In the renovation, we replaced all the industrial steel windows, and their slender mullions frame the light and the views. We kept the raw, industrial character that makes the space special: high ceilings, steel and honest materials keep the spirit of a working studio, with the comfort of a modern apartment.
The Mullion is on the first floor and faces north, which in Cape Town means sunlight streams in for much of the day. The open-plan living area centres on a well-equipped kitchen, so you can cook with produce from the nearby Neighbourgoods Market or simply make a good coffee in the morning.
With Wi-Fi and a dedicated desk, the loft is as good for working as it is for relaxing. It's an inspiring base for digital nomads, writers and creatives on a longer stay.

Every piece in The Mullion has a story. The apartment is furnished with antiques and artworks by Mark Hilltout, alongside work by the artists in the adjoining studio. Many pieces hang in handmade rustic wooden frames by Luna Designs, the original makers of these frames, whose workshop is in the same building.

The Mullion is part of a small industrial complex that is still full of makers. Your neighbours include a bakery, a sweets maker, textile businesses and the Luna Designs frame workshop. On weekdays the building is busy with people making things, as Woodstock has been for almost a century.
